The Workings of the Supreme Court

 

For nearly two centuries, the Supreme Court has stood as the foundation of the American justice system, guiding the nation through periods of profound change. Its decisions have shaped the course of history, influencing landmark events, driving societal transformation, and refining the legal framework that governs the United States.

Growing up in a foreign household, I wasn't exposed to much discussion about politics or the American justice system. So watching the video helped me gain knowledge on our American justice system. One of the key points I want to highlight is that the Supreme Court is the highest authority within the U.S. Federal Judiciary system. This means it holds ultimate jurisdiction over all federal and state cases, meaning that the Supreme Court is the most powerful in the country.

American citizens haven't always been supportive of the Supreme Court, but that changed significantly after the landmark "Marbury v. Madison" case. This pivotal decision established the principle of judicial review, which enhanced the system of checks and balances by confirming the Supreme Court as an equal branch of government. The checks and balances system ensures that no single branch—executive, legislative, or judicial—holds too much power.

In learning more about the role of a Supreme Court Justice, I was intrigued to discover that the average tenure is 16 years, though many serve much longer. The longest-serving justice, William O. Douglas, served for 36 years after being appointed in 1939, while the shortest tenure belongs to John Rutledge, who was appointed temporarily during the Senate's recess. Douglas serving for 36 years shows his dedication to the American justice system. Without people like Douglas, the system would probably not be as strong as it is today.

As I’ve delved deeper into the workings of the U.S. Supreme Court, my admiration for the Justices has grown significantly. They play a crucial role in shaping the legal landscape of our nation, approaching their duties with a commitment to fairness, integrity, and thoroughness. Their process of respectful deliberation and careful consideration of arguments enables them to make decisions that have far-reaching implications for our society. This collaborative approach ensures that diverse perspectives are weighed and that the rule of law is upheld in a manner that reflects both justice and equity. Understanding their rigorous process has given me a profound appreciation for the dedication and expertise required to navigate the complexities of constitutional law and its impact on our everyday lives.
